How can you look your commanding officer in the face and say, “All right, I’ll obey you… sometimes. But for certain things, don’t tell me what to do”? That mindset defies the very foundation of an army.
In an army, obedience to instruction is not optional. Whether the outcome is good or not, you must obey. That’s a basic military principle—and it’s also a spiritual one. So why do many Christians live as though it doesn’t apply to them?
Let’s read it clearly:
Hebrews 13:17 — “Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive.”
1 Peter 5:5-6 — “Young men, in the same way submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
Let that sink in: when you refuse to submit, God Himself resists you. It’s not just a man. It’s not just your leader. It’s the Commander-in-Chief who opposes you.
Now, who are these young men being told to submit?
1 John 2 says: “I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.”
These are not baby Christians. They’re not weak. They’re strong. They know the Scriptures. They have overcome. Yet, even they are commanded to submit. Why? Because spiritual strength does not exempt you from authority—it demands that you honor it.
Disobedience to spiritual rank doesn’t just affect you—it endangers the entire army.
So obey. Submit. This is how we walk in order, and this is how we win the war.
