Grace, Acceptance, And The Natural Fruit Of Good Works

God doesn’t accept you because of what you do. He accepts you because He died for you while you were yet a sinner — Romans 5. He didn’t wait for you to clean up your act. He died for you. The acceptance is by grace, not by your good deeds.

But after acceptance, being around Him should make it natural to do good things. Why wouldn’t you do good things once you’ve enjoyed His goodness? If you leave and continue as before, something is wrong.

There are people who say, “I’ve sinned; I’m not worthy.” I constantly tell them: come. He doesn’t accept you because of your works. But being in His presence, hearing the Word, being prayed for — these are all acts of God doing good deeds to you. The appropriate human response after experiencing that is to reflect it: love God more, love people, do good works.

Grace leads to love, and love leads to good works. That is the expected fruit.
