After three days, they found Jesus sitting with the teachers, listening to them. Teachers don’t shout much because they expect you to listen. They do not want you in an emotional state where you’re not thinking. It matters greatly to them that you think.
Scammers, on the other hand, need you in an emotional state where you’re not thinking—that’s how scams work. They put a person in a state where thinking is greatly reduced. There’s a level of mental interference with faith, but if you find someone who never wants you to think much about what they’re saying or doing, who just wants you to follow along, you should be suspicious. You might be dealing with a spiritual scammer.
The Lord Jesus, as a boy, was listening to them and asking them questions. He didn’t say, “I know I shouldn’t be rude. I shouldn’t be questioning you people.” You’re allowed to ask. They could be wrong. They could make mistakes. To this day, this is the key to spiritual maturity.
“Solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil” (Hebrews 5:14). How did they train themselves? By constant use. They are the ones whose senses and mental faculties are trained by practice to discriminate and distinguish between what is morally good and noble and what is evil and contrary to divine or human law. This is who solid food is for—those whose senses have been trained, who can look at something and say, “But God’s word does not approve this.”
“Why would God approve that I should stand up at 12 midnight and go outside to bathe? Why does the water not work inside the bathroom? Why would God send me to a junction with oil?”
This is how you learn: ask questions. Be compelled to reason.
