Balaam was hired by Balak, king of Moab, to curse Israel. They built seven altars and sacrificed seven oxen on each one. He opened his mouth to curse Israel, but blessing came out instead. He said things like, “There is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel.” He repeated it in different ways. They tried three times and still he could not curse them.
These people had no Holy Spirit inside them like believers today, and yet the verdict was the same: there is no enchantment against them. Today people talk about witches everywhere, but scripture says clearly—there is none that can work. If any attack happens, it means there was a crack inside, not external power.
After failing to curse them, Balaam told the king another strategy: send women. And the Moabite women came. The Israelite men sinned, and God killed 23,000 (or 24,000 in another account). That is how to take down an Israelite—through internal failure. Satan knows this. So he makes sure no one focuses on fear, selfishness, impatience, laziness, distraction, and ignorance. He makes sure preachers don’t focus on them either. He distracts everyone from the real enemies.
The Balaam story shows the same principle from beginning to end: external curses cannot touch you unless there is an open door from within.
