In Isaiah 61, Scripture is clear: God wants to bring freedom for captives, and release from darkness for prisoners. It’s not a side topic. It’s part of the actual good news. The problem is that many people hear the word “captivity” and immediately assume it does not concern them. They picture someone chained from neck to feet, dragging metal everywhere, and say, “That’s not me.” But captivity is not limited to visible chains. A person can be locked in a room with no chains and still be a captive. Another person can have only their hands cuffed, but their legs free. Another may be free inside the room but unable to go out. These are all levels of captivity.
This is why Jesus told believers in John 8, “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free.” And instead of accepting it, they argued. Believers argued with Jesus Himself about whether they were slaves. So, if they argued then, you can be sure believers argue now.
The Holy Spirit tells someone, “You’re in bondage here,” and the person rejects the voice, insisting nothing is wrong. You cannot be helped when you defend your chains.
If you don’t accept truth about your condition, you stay the same. Many people are in some form of bondage and have refused to acknowledge it for years. That is why they remain the same for years. You cannot call captivity by a softer name and think you will be free. The moment you admit “I am bound here,” you have taken the first real step to freedom.
