Many people do not understand sin. They think God hates pleasure or dislikes enjoyment. That is false. Everything you call “pleasure,” God created it. The problem is rarely the object, it is almost always the procedure. Sugar is not evil. But taking sugar secretly, at the wrong time, in the wrong context, is wrong. The same sugar in your tea is not a problem. Sugar stolen from the container and hidden in your pocket is a problem—not because sugar changed, but because the method violated order.
This applies to many things people call ‘sin.’ A medicine used properly is helpful; the same substance abused becomes bondage. Intimacy between a husband and wife is righteous; the same act outside the right context becomes sin. Taking gold from Jericho was forbidden and cost Achan his life; taking gold from the next city was commanded. The issue is not the gold. It is the lawfulness.
This is why Jesus will tell people “depart from me, you who practice lawlessness.” Lawlessness (anomia) means doing what is not authorized. You can prophesy unlawfully. You can minister unlawfully. You can even help people unlawfully. And until people understand the difference between lawful and unlawful, they will continue calling sin what is not a sin, and excusing what truly is sin.
