The Bible says Jesus stood up and read. In that place, He read two things He said He would do. One, proclaim the day of salvation. Two, proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.
The word grace means favour. Favour means to show kindness. It does not always mean unmerited favour. That teaching is incomplete. Grace can be merited and it can be unmerited. God’s favour is not always unmerited. How do we know? The Bible says He gives grace to the humble. That means humility comes before grace. That means something was done.
There are times God says, “Do this and I will do this.” And there are times He says, “No matter what your sons do, I will keep a name for Myself.” That was the promise to David. His sons went into captivity. They went to Babylon. But God preserved the line.
Let me give you an example. An uncle says, “I will take care of you every semester.” That is favour. If he does not attach conditions, it is unconditional. If he says, “Maintain this grade,” then it becomes conditional, but it is still grace.
