When God Shows “Too Much Kindness”

Jesus said something that does not fit how we think. He said it will be better for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for certain cities where He performed mighty works. Think about that. Greater signs. Greater wonders. Greater light. Yet greater judgment.

Why would God do the most fantastic, shiny, miraculous things in places that behave the worst? So that He may be justified when He judges them. That is the principle.

Why is He so kind to this one who keeps causing problems? Why does this one keep receiving mercy? Why does this one, who often misbehaves, keep having experiences? Romans 2. The kindness of God leads you to repentance.

If God is being extremely kind to you, it may mean there is a lot you need to repent of. We used to think it was the opposite. “Ah, this one is special to God.” No. Many times, that one is a problem child.

It’s like a family adopting a child from the village. They prove love in a serious way. Especially if that child has issues. He does not steal little amounts of money, he steals the whole bag of money, and discards the bag to destroy the evidence. Yet they keep showing love. Why? To convince him: “In spite of what you’ve done, I love you.”

Do not misread excessive kindness. Sometimes it is mercy extended before judgment. God’s kindness is not flattery. It is a call to repentance.
