Elisha remained with Elijah until the day Elijah was taken up. By that time, multiple groups of prophets had already told him that his master would be taken away from him that day.
Three different groups of prophets gave the same message. That meant the moment was approaching. The transition was near.
But even then, Elisha continued following Elijah faithfully. He did not step ahead of the process.
Finally, he witnessed the chariots of fire and the whirlwind that carried Elijah away. Only then did the promise connected to his original calling begin to unfold.
We do not know how many years he served. It could have been five years. Ten years. Fifteen years. We are not told. What we are told is that he served.
This is why people must stop assuming that when God says something, it means they should jump up and act immediately. The wise response is to ask God about the timing.
Sometimes what you think is meant for today was actually meant for years later. When the right time finally comes and things begin to unfold perfectly, you realize that God’s timing was exact all along.
The key is humility and faithful service. That is what prepares a person to step into the moment when the commissioning finally arrives.
