While we were praying, Pastor mentioned the word “Nehushtan,” and it struck me immediately. I was trembling and quaking quietly.
Then I saw a picture of a bronze serpent coiled around a tall pole with a flat horizontal bar at its top. On the bar was written:
“The Great Nehushtan.”
I prayed about it for several days, seeking more clarity on its meaning. I then got that in the vision, Nehushtan represented something God places in a person’s life to keep them from rotting in sin—something or someone that God sends to a person to save them from destruction.
When the purpose of that thing or person is fulfilled, the “bronze serpent” must be destroyed completely.
I understood that in the context of authority, the bronze serpent (Nehushtan) is a shadow of things to come — that is, it precedes authority, but should not replace authority.
I also got that Nehushtan and the brazen pole are symbolic of Jesus Christ and the cross.
John 3:14-16 speaks of what the bronze serpent was meant for and identifies it as the cross foretold in the Old Testament.
I had the impression that ‘Nehushtan’ is what the devil is using now to accuse some Christians.
Nehushtan may be a person, a place, or even a church group.
Some of us were sent to help others in certain ways so they could gain stature in God and run their own race. When they are finally assigned official authority over them, we are to withdraw from being the primary figure in their lives, because discipleship has come. We are to avoid breaking ranks.
The bronze serpent that was not destroyed after serving its purpose eventually became Nehushtan —an idol. When the purpose of something is unknown or ignored, abuse is inevitable. Some of us have become Nehushtans in other people’s lives, continuing to play a major role in certain persons lives and preventing the true shepherds from doing their work.
This does not mean that older brethren should stop assisting or that believers should cease exhorting one another daily (Hebrews 3:13). The problem arises when people who are not qualified to shepherd try to do so because they are good friends, because they brought someone to church, or because they are compatible.
I am convinced that God is set to oppose every Nehushtan spirit in His house, because it is a form of idolatry. Christians must examine themselves to be sure they are not carrying this idol.
