Galatians 5 says, “The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.”
Witchcraft is listed among things we already know can exist among Christians.
Sexual immorality is there, and Christians have been known to fall into it. Hatred is there, and Christians struggle with it too. So why do you assume witchcraft is the only one that cannot be present?
The Bible already places it in the same category—works of the flesh. That means it is not as distant as people think.
What then is witchcraft?
The word translated witchcraft is pharmakeia. It is where you get the word “pharmacy.” It has to do with mixing things to produce an effect.
Witchcraft is not only about physical substances, rituals, or shrines. That is one level. But at its core, it is about creating influence, control, or results outside of God’s Spirit.
God works by His Spirit. God works by His Word. But when a person wants to produce outcomes by their own means, they begin to “mix.”
Mix what? Words. Emotions. Manipulation. Pressure.
You can use your mouth to create reactions inside people. You say something, and suddenly anger rises, suspicion rises, hatred begins. Something has been activated in them.
That is not the Spirit of God at work. That is the flesh generating an effect.
This is where many miss it. They think witchcraft is something far away, something extreme. Meanwhile, it is happening through everyday actions.
So instead of saying, “That cannot be me,” it is wiser to ask, “Is there anything in my life where I am trying to create results outside of God’s will?”
