Many believers do not love God at all. They came to Him for salvation, not because they loved Him. They loved themselves and called on the One who could save them. That does not automatically produce love for God.
Love for God is proven by keeping His commandments. If the Holy Spirit reminds you of Scripture and you disobey without hesitation, love is not present. If your comfort is threatened even slightly and obedience is abandoned, love is absent.
Love is proven when obedience costs you something. The ultimate love is reached when you are willing to lay down your life, even when you could escape. Jesus could have called for angels. He had the authority. He chose not to. That is what laying down your life looks like.
Love is submitting to the Father’s will even when you have options. That is the standard.
Many people speak of faith and hope. Faith is important. Hope is important. But Scripture says love is the greatest. Faith can fail. Love does not. Love connects directly to God. Wise people aim for love.
