The phrase “Let us consider how we may spur one another” (Hebrews 10:24) shows that God recognizes we are thinking beings. To consider is to reflect, to plan, to weigh options carefully, not to act rashly.
Consideration is practical. If a wedding is to be organized, you think about ushers, food, uniforms, money, and how to make it work. This is what it means to consider. Some things are already in place; others require adjustment. You think it through.
Unfortunately, many people prefer settings where there is no real consideration, only feelings. But proper gatherings require thought. Who should lead the worship session? Who will spur the people to love God best? Decisions like these should be the result of careful consideration.
At the same time, remember that God created people differently. Gifts differ. Natural gifts like singing, are not the same as supernatural gifts like discernment. None of them operate all the time. There are times to sing, times to be quiet, times to act, times to pray.
The assembly must recognize these differences and organize accordingly. By considering carefully, we can ensure that every part of the gathering truly spurs people on toward love and good works.
