When Elijah finally encountered Elisha, he did something very simple. He threw his cloak over him and kept walking. Elisha responded by saying he would follow, and Elijah replied, “Did I say anything to you?” Then he walked away.
Elisha did not argue. He did not begin demanding explanations. He did not ask Elijah to repeat what God had said word for word. Many people today would do exactly that.
They would say, “God mentioned my name. You owe it to me to tell me exactly what He said.” Some would insist that since God said to anoint them to take the office, they should immediately begin operating in that position.
They would argue that becoming someone’s servant was not part of the prophecy. They would accuse the older man of withholding their destiny. But Elisha did none of that.
Instead, he went back, shut down his business, killed the oxen he had been working with, burned the wooden yoke, and destroyed the path he had been walking in life. Then he followed Elijah and became his servant. That was the picture.
The man who had been named by God to stand in Elijah’s office did not begin by claiming the office. He began by serving the man who held it.
