Fear: A Tool of Satan

Hebrews 2:14 says, “Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death.”

Who held them in slavery? They were not held by God. They were held by fear—the fear of death. Verse 14 makes it clear: he came to break the power of him who holds the power of death, that is the devil. Fear is like a chain connecting you to the devil. You feel terrified. He whispers, “I’ll destroy your business. I’ll strike your health. I’ll take your home. I’ll ruin your name.” Fear of loss, fear of death, and so on—this is how the devil keeps people in slavery. This fear controls their choices, keeps them from obeying God, and makes them compromise their integrity.

Imagine being in the house of a wealthy person, enjoying comfort and luxury. If you refuse to comply with their demands—especially evil ones—the fear of losing comfort, the fear of being expelled, controls you. That’s the same principle that applies across all fears. Jesus came and reversed this. He said, “Take up your cross and follow me. Come and die.” By dying, Jesus overcame Satan. Satan lost his power. This principle still works today: the way to fight Satan is by refusing to give in to fear, by declaring, “The worst you can do is kill my body; you cannot touch my spirit. I will not compromise!”
