People open the Bible and all they want is the part that tells them how to prosper. Yes, the scriptures have promises. Peter says in 2 Peter 1 that there are exceedingly great and precious promises. But Romans 15:4 says the scriptures give endurance and encouragement. Jeremiah 23 says the word of God is fire. Deuteronomy 32 says it is like rain. It is also a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces. These are the functions the scriptures give themselves. People have turned it into what they want, but scripture already stated what it is.
So when you read stories like Job, Elijah, Elisha, you are supposed to learn endurance. When you read about kings in Chronicles or Kings—how they began, what they did, what pleased God, what displeased God, and how they ended—those are examples.
If you are a leader in any way, you are supposed to look and learn. What pleased God? What brought trouble? What does their end teach you?
How do you know the purpose of a story in scripture? Look at the end. James 5:11 says you have seen the perseverance of Job and the end intended by the Lord.
Look at Jezebel. Horses trampled her and dogs ate her. So how can a preacher praise Jezebel? When you see a character in scripture, look at their end. That is how you know what lesson you are meant to take. What pleases God? What offends Him? What are the warnings?
