I was in Year 1 or 2 when I left my choir. It was one of the best in the town. We trained hard, performed in auditoriums, and leading churches in the city came to learn from us.
I stayed in church fully, but I had to leave that choir to focus and grow deep. There’s a price to pay. And I keep saying: I don’t know anyone God calls to be a disciple who doesn’t leave something. It’s not possible.
“You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.”
(2 Timothy 2:3–4)
You won’t grow if you don’t let go. You’ll just keep hoping, while others are advancing. You’re distracted—Martha.
Today, Jesus is saying, “Don’t be a Martha.” Drop those civilian affairs. You’ve been warned. Don’t act surprised when you look back and see the depth of relationship you should have had is missing.
All your impressive structures—what people admire—will mean nothing. “Ah, Martha, what a lovely feast!” others will say. The Commander will sit, eat only rice and one chicken leg, then leave. Who did you make the rest for?
Even as a human being, I get unhappy when people try to please me with things I never asked for. I tell them, “This is what I’m interested in. Focus here.” But they insist on doing what they want—just to say they did something.
Love follows orders. What does Jesus want? He wants you in formation—at His feet—listening for His voice.
