Mark 14:38 — “Stay awake.” That’s the word. “Watch,” the King James says. And pray, so that you won’t enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. Well, sometimes the spirit is not even willing. Let’s hope I’m talking to those whose spirits are willing, because there are people whose spirits are not.
Jesus didn’t just say “pray.” He said “Watch and pray.” Stay awake. Be on guard. Stay alert. Stay at your post. Then pray.
Nigeria might be the best example of a country where prayer seems endless. Long fasts. Intense prayer campaigns. They breathe prayer. But Jesus didn’t say “Just pray.” He said watch and pray.
Because when you’re not on alert — not situationally aware — the enemy flanks you. You’ll enter into temptation. Spiritual warfare is not just about loud prayer; it’s about watchfulness — having reconnaissance.
If you’re not watching, you can’t sound the alarm when there’s movement at the border.
