Some of you think staying hungry is the proof of spirituality. As long as you can say, “I fasted,” you feel holy. Meanwhile, you are breaking God’s commandments left and right. You are wicked to people. You refuse to apologize. You mistreat those around you. But you want God to honor your fasting. He won’t.
Israel fasted for 70 years (Zechariah 7:5) and God said none of it was for Him. Why? Because the things He actually asked for—justice, mercy, compassion, and not oppressing one another—they refused to do. This describes many Nigerians today. They fast endlessly while ignoring God’s instructions.
Some even fast instead of doing their chores, instead of obeying their parents, instead of submitting where they should. That is not spirituality. That is rebellion done in God’s name. And people wonder why unbelievers look at Christians and mock God.
God is not a Nigerian pastor. He is not impressed with your dry throat. He wants obedience. If you would obey first, most of the fasting people do would not even be necessary. Jesus Himself told the Pharisees, “You fast, but you neglect the weightier matters.” Those weightier matters are still the same today: justice, mercy, humility, and obedience. If you want your fasting to mean anything, start with obedience.
