The Seriousness of Refusing to Repent

Isaiah 22 shows a principle most believers ignore. God called His people on a specific day to weep, mourn, repent, and acknowledge wrongdoing. Instead, they said, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” That attitude is what provoked God’s response.

The prophet said God revealed something terrifying to him: “this sin will not be atoned for.” That means there would be no covering. In scripture, when blood covers sin, judgment passes over. That’s atonement—covering.

But when you refuse to acknowledge your sin, you remove yourself from the group that receives covering. So the person ends up paying for what could have been forgiven.

Many believers misunderstand forgiveness. There are two ways a debt is cleared: either another pays it, or you pay it yourself.

Jesus is our kinsman redeemer, but if someone refuses repentance, they choose to pay their own debt. That is why some people suffer consequences for years; they never actually repented. It is not mystery. It is not that God hates them. It is because they refused to acknowledge the sin in the season God called for repentance.

Humility acknowledges wrongdoing. Pride says, “I don’t owe anything.” And because they claim they owe nothing, they pay everything.
