When God told Israel to wipe out the nations in the land, He was not being cruel. He knew exactly what would happen if they tried to coexist. He knew the enemy would not be content to live side by side. The enemy would want to rule.
How could God be their king if Philistines were ruling them? How could He be king if Ammonites, Moabites, Amalekites, and Midianites were in charge? He gave clear instructions: do not plan to share. Do not marry them. Do not take them in.
Israel disobeyed. Judges 3 tells us the result. They lived among the Canaanites and others. They married them. They served their gods. The purpose of deliverance was lost. God brought them out of Egypt so He would be their God and they would be His people. But now, other gods took His place.
This is the danger of incomplete obedience. There are things that should have been wiped out early. Because they were not, they stayed. Then they grew. Then they took over. They occupied the place that belongs to God.
If we had known how serious it was, many of us would have obeyed God more carefully. What started as small became dominant. What was meant to be temporary became lord. That is why God insisted on total removal. Not because He is harsh, but because He understands how authority works.
