Understanding the King’s Authority

You have to decide if you want to be a soldier or a civilian.

A civilian is a citizen of a country. In the old picture, there is a king or queen, and the citizen is under that king. In our picture, Jesus is the King.

Now, if the King rules over the domain and you are in that domain, you are meant to submit to the King’s authority. Every citizen should.

But there is something interesting in Luke 19. Jesus gave a picture of a king who left to receive an expanded kingdom. While he was away, his citizens sent a message after him saying, “We don’t want that man ruling over us” (Luke 19:14).

There are people under God’s domain, under Jesus’ domain, who hate Him.

For years, I have tried to tell the people of God who hear me that they should learn the fear of God.

There is this error that has been preached for so long that presents Jesus as though He is extremely soft. You have seen those pictures of Jesus that look almost feminine — very soft.

But how many of you know Jesus was a carpenter? How many of you have seen a soft carpenter?

And there is another question about the word translated “carpenter.” It can refer to an artisan, someone who works with his hands. It may even have been someone who worked with stone. I am not saying that as though it is an established fact. I am saying that I have heard this from people who have lived among Jews and studied the language.

And think about the language used about Jesus and the apostles used throughout Scripture. You constantly hear building language.

We are built upon a foundation. Jesus is the chief cornerstone. We are living stones. Jesus said, “I will build my church.” There is building language everywhere.

So when we speak about Jesus, we should not reduce Him to the soft picture that people have created. He is King.

And if He is King, then the question is not merely whether you like Him. The question is whether you submit to His authority.
