One of the things we need to understand is that the Word of God was not meant to be spoken only by preachers.
Look at Deuteronomy 6:7. The instruction was that God’s words should be taught diligently to your children. You should talk about them when you sit in your house, when you walk along the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.
Which part of that sounds like a church meeting? None.
It means that God’s Word was meant to be part of ordinary life. You discuss it in the kitchen. You discuss it on your way somewhere. You discuss it when you are sitting at home. You discuss it when you are walking. You discuss it before you go to bed and when you wake up.
That is why the Jewish culture developed as a culture of engagement with Scripture. Children were constantly being taught the Word of God, so naturally, they asked questions.
There is a difference between reading the Word and discussing the Word.
The Bible says, “You shall teach them diligently,” and then it says you shall talk about them.
So you should be able to see something in Scripture and discuss what it means. You should be able to say, “I think this means this,” and someone else can respond, “I don’t agree. Let’s look at it.”
That kind of engagement was part of the culture out of which the Bible came. God wanted His matters to be discussed all the time.
Parents should talk about it with their children. Family members should talk about it with one another. Children should be able to ask questions.
God’s people should be able to engage the Word of God.
