Jesus said, “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now” [John 16:12].
Then He explained how that limitation would be handled: “When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth” [John 16:13].
Notice that He did not simply say that the Spirit would tell you all truth. He said the Spirit would guide you into all truth.
A guide walks with you. As you journey, the guide points things out to you. Being led into truth is therefore a journey. It is not simply sitting in one place and reading books nonstop, hoping to dig up everything there is to know.
I grew up reading a lot. I like reading, studying, and knowledge. But I came to understand that some things are only understood through obedience.
The longer I walked with God and sought to obey Him, the more I discovered that there are truths you cannot understand merely by studying them. The Spirit shows you things as you journey with Him.
You cannot separate the life you live from your capacity to understand truth. A life of obedience and a love for truth are connected to your ability to receive what the Spirit is teaching.
The Spirit does not merely give you information. He guides you into truth.
