When Jesus said, “Freely you have received, freely give,” He meant that what you received from God is still a free gift, no matter how you obtained it.
Some people may have spent years seeking God. They may have spent hours praying, studying the Bible and waiting on Him while others were doing something else. But that does not mean they paid for the grace of God.
Everybody pays a price for something. Some people spend years acquiring a skill. Others spend years seeking God. But there is nothing you have done that can pay for the goodness and grace of God.
Do you know what it means to pray for someone or rebuke a spirit that has been afflicting someone for eighteen years? The wealthiest people in the world cannot buy freedom from certain demonic oppression or find money to remove certain sicknesses. Yet God can bring deliverance.
How do you pay for God to free your generation from years of oppression? What cash can you drop? Who will you give the money to?
You cannot afford the grace of God. There is nothing you brought that qualifies you for what you received. According to the Maker of all things, He gave it to you freely.
However, the Bible also tells us how to reward servants of God. First Corinthians 9 teaches that those who labour in the house of God should be supported by those they serve. A labourer deserves his wages.
Think about an engineer who spent years learning his profession. When people need him to handle a building project, they pay him for his skill and experience. A servant of God also spends years being prepared to serve God’s people. The fact that he received God’s grace freely does not mean he should not be supported for his labour.
The distinction is that you cannot pay God for His grace, but you can honour and support those who labour in His service, according to Scripture.
