Abraham is the father of faith. God told him to change his name to Abraham, meaning father of many nations, even when he did not have a child.
Imagine the embarrassment. Someone asks you, “What is your name?” You say, “I am the father of many nations.” The person asks, “How many children do you have?” You have none.
Yet Abraham obeyed God and changed his name. Eventually, God fulfilled His word. Abraham had Isaac through Sarah, and after Sarah died, he had six sons through Keturah. Today, Christians, Muslims and Jews all look to Abraham as their father. Has God’s word come to pass? Yes. Did it look as though it was coming to pass at the time? No.
That is how walking by faith works. You obey God, even when it seems as though you are being ridiculous, because you trust that He will fulfil His word. Sometimes, the fulfilment may come even after you are dead.
Read Hebrews 11. The Bible says that those people died in faith without having received the promises.
But the kind of faith that is popular in some churches today is that you must see the result immediately. You started trusting God four years ago, and now everybody must see the results.
Let me tell you my own experience.
About 18 years before it happened, when I was a Year Two student, on my birthday, I was told that I would be teaching the Word with people seated around me. Eighteen years later, I was sitting in my parlour teaching, and there was no space. People had filled all the chairs and people were sitting on the ground.
As I looked at the people, I remembered what I had been told 18 years earlier. It had taken that long.
You want God to give you a word today, and by this evening, you want to become an apostle, raising the dead, casting down principalities and overcoming powers.
But faith is not about forcing God’s promises to happen according to your preferred timetable. It is about obeying Him and trusting Him, even when you have not yet seen the promise fulfilled.
