The first thing every soldier should know is that there is a level of maturity required for service. In the natural, the youngest age for conscription in Israel was 20 years old. Numbers 1:3 says that the men of Israel who were twenty years old and above, and able to serve in the army, were counted.
Notice two things: they had to be at least twenty, and they had to be able to serve. Age alone was not enough. Someone could be twenty years old and still be unable to serve because of a physical disability.
There is a spiritual lesson here. You can be old enough to be expected to serve in the body of Christ and still be disabled spiritually. You may have the age, but you may not have the capacity to serve effectively.
There were also different levels of service. The soldier was one level. The Levite serving in the tabernacle was required to be older, and the priest was required to be older still. Why? Because it takes time to make a soldier, and it takes even more time to make someone who can serve closely in the house of God.
This is why you should not despise time in your walk with God. The length of time you have continued with God matters. For years, I wondered why I would see some men of God growing in authority even when I knew they still had errors in their lives. Eventually, I understood that time itself has significance.
If someone has continued steadfastly in serving God for twenty, twenty-five, or thirty years, God takes note of that perseverance. New responsibilities can be added. New levels of authority can come. It does not mean the person has no shortcomings. It means they have continued.
So don’t think that because you love God and know some Bible you have automatically become mature. There are levels of service, and time has a part to play in your walk with God.
