Jesus explained that fruit does not appear immediately. That is why the owner waited three years. According to Leviticus 19, fruit from a newly planted tree is considered forbidden for the first three years. The fourth year belongs to God. The fifth year is for eating.
That means early fruit is not reliable. New believers can be sincere and still dangerous. They are passionate but unstable. That is why wisdom does not rush newly born-again people into leadership or ministry. Their fruit is not yet mature.
People get born again today and open a YouTube ministry tomorrow. That is not wisdom. Early fruit is forbidden. Time is needed. Roots must go deep. Environment must be right.
But hear this clearly: time is given so that fruit will come, not so that fruit will be excused forever.
The warning is to trees that received seed, trees that have stood for years, trees that were given time. Every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down.
That is why they asked again, “What should we do?” (Luke 3:10). And that question still stands. We must constantly be searching for what we are to do.
