What results in defeat in most of the battles of the Lord is that when we conquer and push the enemy back a bit, we hurry back to go and rest. That’s not how Joshua fought. Do you remember how Joshua fought once and kept fighting till the sun going down was about to interrupt him? So he held the sun in its place. Are you seeing the follow-through? It’s called perseverance.
Saul did not have perseverance. “Go and conquer the Amalekites.” He didn’t finish the job. Major source of defeat in battle [write it in large letters]: LACK OF PERSEVERANCE.
This is among the greatest enemies.
Let me tell you the distinction between a man and a child. A major sign that you are a man, that you are mature, is that you persevere—you continue to do it. A major sign of immaturity is that you don’t persevere. You have a very limited attention span. You commit for very short lengths of time.
David would follow through. He planted garrisons—the way Philistines had garrisons, that’s what David did with them. He conquered totally. He hit the place, dropped people behind, and kept them under subjugation. If David is on the warpath, nothing stands. We must be such people.
