Ignorance is a big enemy. It works by keeping treasures away from you. It stops you from knowing what you have and what you should know. Ignorance is a thief—not a thief of what you already have in your hand, but one that steals it before it ever arrives. It is like someone stealing your mail. You lose things you don’t even know you were supposed to receive.
Ignorance links with laziness. They are very close. You will hear it in thoughts like, “Why do you need to know about this? It’s not important. Why do you want to read that? You’re not a reader.” The next time you hear a voice tell you, “You’re not a reader,” rebuke it. That is ignorance speaking, trying to keep you ignorant.
If God didn’t want people to know things, then why did He say, “These words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children… talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. Write them on your doorposts and your gates”? (Deuteronomy 6:6-8).
Why write them where everyone can see if people weren’t meant to learn? Why bind them on hands and foreheads if reading and remembering weren’t important?
This is why Jewish culture is filled with learning. Even non-religious Jews are known for education. Other societies kept people ignorant. Priests and royalty were the only educated. It still happens today in the body of Christ where people are discouraged from learning. The Roman church ruled people at a time by keeping them ignorant, even killing those who tried to read the Bible. But the early church wrote letters and said, “Read them. Get others to read them.” Knowledge is tied to freedom.
Ignorance is not a small enemy. It is a giant. Fight it endlessly. Want to know. Study your Bible. Buy a book. Listen to teachings. Never feel proud about not knowing. Feel bad about ignorance. Not because knowledge is a god, but because you cannot worship God properly without knowledge.
