The Way People Misread the Prodigal Son

People look at the prodigal son and his older brother, and instead of learning what the story teaches, they praise the prodigal. They tell lies about how the prodigal enjoyed life on both sides and came back and everything was perfect. They do not understand the story. The prodigal had nothing. He came home empty. The father had to put sandals on him, a robe, and a ring. He killed a fatted calf for him. But the father said to the older brother, “All I have is yours.” Not “was,” but “is.” Meaning the entire estate was legally the older brother’s.

The younger son had demanded his inheritance earlier. The older son still had everything. The fatted calf was his. The robe was his. The sandals were his. But it was not yet time for him to take over because the father was still alive. So when people get jealous because someone else is suddenly celebrated or given something, they do not understand how God thinks.

If you have entrusted what is yours to the Father, He knows how to invest it. He knows what He is doing.

There are preachers who have demanded their inheritance from God. They are the ones who tell their followers to demand everything now. “Take it now. Claim it now.” They preach a prodigal gospel. And there are many Christians following them without knowing they are repeating the mistake. Yes, you can tell God “give me.” He may give you. And He may say, “You have your reward.” Jesus said it. When you insist, God allows it, but later when the real rewards come, there will be nothing left for you.

When the day comes in Luke 19 or Matthew 25, when the Master says, “Well done,” many will be sad because they spent their entire life demanding immediate blessings. They used what belonged to the Father as though it were their own. They did not allow Him to manage it. You must decide whether you will behave like the younger son who wanted everything instantly or the older son who trusted the Father’s timing.
