I didn’t think I would ever join a team to evangelise in the hospital again after an embarrassing experience I had during a previous visit. We had prayed for a woman whose baby had died while in the womb. She was in a lot of pain, and I was the one who ended up sobbing profusely.
But when the opportunity came to join the hospital evangelism team again, I said yes. On the first day, I was very afraid—literally shaking. Our team head rebuked the fear, and it lifted significantly after that. These days, I’m excited to go for evangelism in the hospital and to talk to people, and I am very grateful to God for this.
There’s a particular ward we often enter to follow up with those we’ve spoken to. Interestingly, no nurse ever stops us. Because of this, one of us jokingly said that the ward has become our territory, and I’m grateful to God for that.
What I’m especially thankful for is the leading of the Holy Spirit and the ability to obey promptly.
Last Tuesday, I arrived at the hospital and met one of our team members who works there. She was confused about whether to go home or stay back and join us. I casually asked her if she was sure the Lord wanted her to leave. She remained undecided for a while but eventually stayed and joined me.
I went to follow up with two children I had spoken to the previous Tuesday. I couldn’t find them in the ward, so I asked a young girl in the ward if she knew them. She didn’t, but she suggested we check another ward. As we were about to leave, I felt led to speak to her. I asked if we could talk to her, and she said yes.
At first, she tried to sit up so she could listen, but because she was undergoing a blood transfusion, I told her she could remain lying down as it would be more comfortable.
My partner began sharing about the blood of Jesus, explaining how it speaks better things than the blood of Abel. She said, “The blood of Abel seeks vengeance, but the blood of Jesus forgives, cleanses, and makes us new.” We asked the girl what the issue was, and she explained that she had suddenly started bleeding without reason.
My partner continued ministering, saying what the girl needed wasn’t just a blood transfusion but the blood of Jesus, which speaks peace and forgiveness. She gave an example of wealthy people who lack peace and said that true peace comes from God.
As my partner spoke, I strongly felt the girl needed to be born again. But I also sensed she first needed to confess her sins and be prayed for. I had gotten the scripture James 5:15–16:
“Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” (NIV)
I remained quiet with this scripture in my heart. Then, unexpectedly, my partner began to speak about confessing, not just to God but to people as well. She shared a story about a man who confessed a long-hidden lie to his wife and finally found peace with both God and man. She encouraged the girl not to be ashamed if she had anything she wanted to open up about.
I was overwhelmed. This was exactly what the Holy Spirit had shown me. I finally spoke up and told the girl that what my partner was saying wasn’t coming from her head—it was from the Holy Spirit. I showed her the scripture and told her I believed she needed to be born again, but also needed to confess her sins first. She nodded in agreement. It became obvious that God was trying to bring hidden sin into the light, something the enemy was using to accuse her.
We asked her if there was anything she wanted to confess. At first, she said no. But my partner encouraged her gently, saying the Lord would help her. My partner even shared a brief testimony of her own past and how the Lord saved her and restored her family. Eventually, the girl agreed to confide in my partner. She whispered something to her—something I couldn’t hear. Just then, a nurse came to attend to her, so we stepped outside to wait till she was done.
Outside the ward, my partner told me what the girl had confessed – she had committed an abortion.
It was amazing how everything connected, from the search for those children to speaking to this particular girl, to the exact scriptures and leading of the Spirit. Later, my partner shared more details: the girl’s father had thrown her out, but when the bleeding started, her sister pleaded with him to send money for her treatment.
I remembered what our pastor once said: “Matters of bloodguiltiness are weighty and require the wisdom and leading of the Holy Spirit.”
While waiting, we began to pray, asking for weapons, for the Spirit’s direction and wisdom. Scriptures came to mind—Romans 3:23, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” and 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” We also remembered the scripture that says all sins committed by men can be forgiven (Mark 3:28).
When we returned to the ward, it felt like we entered as soldiers, spiritually armed. Before we prayed, my partner led a song, then we prayed for forgiveness, mercy, and healing. I remember saying, “Lord, I know she’s guilty, but You said mercy triumphs over judgment.”
After that, we led her to Christ. It wasn’t just the usual “Lord Jesus, come into my life” kind of prayer—it was deeper. We prayed that the Lord would cleanse her of guilt, shame, regret, depression, and all unrighteousness. We prayed for peace, not only for her but also for her family. She had mentioned earlier that she had stopped dreaming when she got to the hospital, so we prayed for the restoration of her dreams as well. When we were done, she was filled with so much hope and joy. This was going to be the beginning of a new phase for her.
I thank God that we obeyed His leading and didn’t walk away because things could have ended differently. Imagine leaving the hospital and not reaching out to that young girl. Jesus came for the sick and wounded because they are the ones in need of a physician. We got her number to follow up with her, and bid her farewell after spending some time with her.
May God’s name alone be praised for His direction, for helping us fight a good fight, and for giving us the words, scriptures, and the sensitivity we needed. Amen.
