Many think that hearing the voice of God is some dramatic event — like thunder or booming sounds from heaven. But it isn’t. The voice of God often sounds like your thoughts. That’s what many don’t realize.
You have to discern it. Ask: Will this thought produce good? Will it lead to righteousness? You also have to be patient and attentive. The voice isn’t always loud. For some with prophetic or seer gifts, it may come through visions or audible impressions. But for many, it’s faint — like a gentle word in your mind that has no business being there.
You may suddenly hear a word you didn’t think about, not something you’ve heard people around you say. And then you wonder, “Why is this in my head?” That’s how it starts — a prompting that doesn’t belong to your normal flow of thought. That’s how the Spirit trains you to discern His voice.
When you start learning to hear God, there’s always a struggle between what He’s saying and what you feel like doing. You’ll hear Him clearly: “Do this.” And you’ll respond, “Next week. Another time.” But He says, “Now.”
That’s how it works. The Spirit doesn’t always wait for your comfort.
