When Elijah told Elisha, “You have asked a hard thing,” he was speaking about the double portion Elisha requested.
Elijah said something important: “if you see me when I am taken from you, then it will be yours. Otherwise it will not.”
How was Elisha supposed to see Elijah being taken up? Remember that Elijah kept trying to discourage him. “Stay here,” Elijah said. But Elisha refused to stay behind.
He followed him to Bethel. He followed him to Jericho. He followed him to the Jordan.
If Elisha had stopped serving because of discouragement, he would never have received the mantle. But many people want the inheritance without the endurance.
They want everything to be smooth. They want encouragement all the time. The moment there is discouragement, they withdraw. Yet there is always a price to pay.
When people saw Elisha afterward, they did not immediately say, “Elisha is powerful.” They said, “The spirit of Elijah rests on him.”
Something transferred because he remained present long enough to receive it. That is why the scripture says, “If you see me when I go, it will be yours.”
Persistence made the difference.
