The scripture says you should lay aside everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles (Hebrews 12:1). There is something you are trying to do—run your race—and there are things that are hindering that race. Sin is not just “wrong behavior,” it is something that entangles. It ties you up. It slows you down. It stops your progress.
The Bible says in John 8:34, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. It didn’t say someone who sinned once. It is talking about the practice of sin. When something keeps happening in your life, when you keep returning to it, when it keeps overcoming you, the scripture says you are a slave to it.
Then 2 Peter 2:19 says, people are slaves to whatever has mastered them. Whatever has overcome you, whatever has control over you, that thing is your master. It doesn’t matter what you call yourself. It doesn’t matter how long you have been in church.
And the scripture tells you to consider Jesus, who endured opposition from sinners so that you will not grow weary (Hebrews 12:3). Why will sinners oppose you? Because when you choose not to sin, it exposes them. When you refuse to join them, it makes them uncomfortable. They want you to be like them so they can feel normal.
That pressure you feel to compromise, that pressure to “just do it,” that pressure to join in—that is not random. It is because your refusal to sin is a light. And sinners don’t like that light.
So the instruction is clear: throw off everything that hinders, and the sin that entangles. Because there is a race marked out for you, and sin is standing in the way of you running it properly.
If you don’t deal with sin, it will deal with you.
