Many people, in all their getting, get everything except understanding.
They pursue money. They pursue recognition. They pursue possessions. They pursue all kinds of things, but they do not pursue understanding.
Scripture says in Ecclesiastes 7:12:
“For wisdom is a defense as money is a defense. But the excellence of knowledge is that wisdom gives life to those who have it.”
Money can be a defense, but money cannot give you the kind of life that wisdom gives.
That is why I have never been jealous of people who have money and lack understanding.
You can have wealth, power, beauty, influence and everything people admire, but if you lack understanding, what do you really have?
There is a God-given ability that comes when a person genuinely seeks understanding. It gives you the capacity to avoid what is wrong.
You begin to understand what God wants. You study His Word. You hear Him say, “Don’t do this,” and you don’t do it. He tells you, “Do this,” and you do it.
You are not simply reacting to life. You are living according to understanding.
Eventually, you will stand before God. It will not be enough to say, “I read 10,000 books.”
The question will be: What did you do with what you knew?
Did you understand what God wanted? Did you depart from evil? Did you study what He likes and act accordingly?
This is why the Bible repeatedly talks about the fool. Proverbs is full of warnings about people who lack understanding and refuse instruction.
The pursuit of understanding is not a small matter. In all your getting, get understanding.
