When we talk about getting understanding, some people immediately think about going to seminars or becoming academically intelligent.
That is not the whole matter.
Job 28:28 says, “Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to depart from evil is understanding.”
So what are you studying?
You are studying how to depart from evil.
You are looking at the Word of God and asking, “How do I avoid what is wrong? How do I please God? How do I keep myself from doing what He does not want?”
You pray about it. You study the Scriptures. You listen. You learn.
God may tell you, “Do not do this.” You do not argue simply because everybody around you is doing it. You stop.
At another time, He may tell you to do something that nobody else is doing. You do it because you have understood what God wants.
That is understanding.
Without faith, it is impossible to please God. Faith comes by hearing the Word of God. So you spend time in His Word, and as you do, you learn His will.
The goal is not simply to accumulate information.
You can read thousands of books and still lack understanding.
Understanding is demonstrated in how you respond to what God has said.
When you understand that there is one person you ultimately have to please, your focus changes. It is not your mother, your father, your brother, your sister, your husband, your wife, your children, your friends, or everybody around you at the expense of God.
The question becomes: What does God want?
You study His Word. You confirm His will. Then you act on it.
That is understanding.
