Animals operate by instinct. A dog growls by instinct. Birds migrate by instinct. A cat knows how to care for its young by instinct.
But man is meant to understand.
You cannot say, “This is just how I feel,” and allow that feeling to determine your actions. You cannot see someone and immediately begin acting according to whatever instinct comes up inside you.
You are supposed to think. You are supposed to listen. You are supposed to learn.
Adam was learning from God. God would come to him in the garden and speak to him. Adam was receiving understanding, and that understanding was supposed to be passed down.
That is why writing is so important. One of the major ways of passing understanding from one generation to another is documentation. You write down what you have learned so that someone else can receive it.
A person who has understanding does not merely know things. He knows what to do with what he knows.
And the most important understanding you can pursue is understanding how to please God.
If you love God, you will want to understand Him. You will want to understand His ways. You will want to know what He likes and what He does not like.
You cannot please someone you do not understand.
So, in all your getting, get understanding (Proverbs 4:7)
