One of the first things I learned was that if I want my prayers answered, I must learn to pray according to the will of God.
First John 5:14–15 says that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us, and if we know that He hears us, we know that we have the petitions we have asked of Him. That changes how you pray.
The first prayer you should pray before you pray is, “Lord, what is Your will?”
Wise people first ask, “Do You want me to do this? Is this okay with You?”
The Lord Jesus expressed it this way: “Not my will, but yours.”
Many Christians never ask God what His will is. They simply decide what they want and begin declaring it.
David understood something different. Psalm 27:4 says, “One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek,” and then he says that he wanted to dwell in the house of the Lord and “inquire in his temple.”
To inquire means to ask questions.
Prayer is not only telling God what you want. It is also asking Him what He thinks.
