Philippians 1:9–10 says, “And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; that ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ.”
Do you see how love works with knowledge and understanding? Paul prayed that their love would increase more and more in knowledge and discernment.
And what is the result of that prayer being answered? You become a person who approves the things that are excellent. You become sincere and without offence.
Now, excellence has nothing to do with having an expensive carpet, a high-tech screen, or a particular arrangement in a room. The excellent spirit Daniel had was not about money or outward appearance. Daniel 5:12 shows that he had understanding and the ability to interpret difficult matters.
You can be very poor and have an excellent spirit. Excellence is not money-related. It has to do with the work of God’s Spirit, including understanding and the ability to untangle difficult questions.
As your love increases with knowledge and understanding, you learn to approve what God approves. You also become sincere.
Many times, we are not totally sincere. But God wants you to become a sincere person and remain without offence until the day of Christ.
Take note of that expression: “Till the day of Christ.”
Some people are without offence for two weeks or six months. The question is, will you remain without offence in five years? If Jesus returns by then, will He find you still walking in a way that pleases Him?
You cannot say that because you used to be a good person, you are still a good person now. You cannot say that because you used to fear God, you are still fearing Him now. You must be a God-fearing person now, and you must continue until Christ appears.
That is why this prayer is specific. You are to be sincere and without offence until the day of Christ.
Ezekiel 33:12–13 also warns that the righteousness of a righteous person will not deliver him in the day he turns to wickedness. Your past righteousness is not an excuse to turn away from God now.
So, let your love increase in knowledge and discernment. Learn to approve the things that are excellent. Be sincere, and continue to live without offence before God.
May God help us to be without offence until the day of Christ.
