A Disciple and a Believer Are Not the Same Thing

A believer believes in Jesus for salvation. A disciple follows Jesus. Those are not automatically the same thing.

Jesus said if anyone comes to Him and does not put Him above father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, and even his own life, that person cannot be His disciple [Luke 14:26].

He was not teaching hatred in the emotional sense. He was saying when family and God clash, God must come first.

Most people want Christianity adjusted around family comfort. But Jesus never taught that.

The apostles walked away from things people today cannot even imagine leaving [Luke 5:11].

Peter, James, and John walked away from the biggest catch of their lives. A Boat sinking miracle. Fish everywhere. Money everywhere. And they left it immediately to follow Jesus.

That is discipleship.

The crowd believed. The disciples followed.

Many people want the reward of discipleship without the life of discipleship.

They want Psalm 23 promises but do not want Psalm 23 obedience. “The Lord is my shepherd.” Okay. When exactly did He become your shepherd?

When did he tell you to leave something important and follow Him and you obeyed? When did you trust him through discomfort? When did you risk lack to obey him?

Some people cannot endure even one day of inconvenience for God. Small hunger. Small uncertainty. Immediately they run back to comfort.

Yet they believe they are ready for the deeper walk. Discipleship is costly [Luke 14:27-33]. It is not about attending meetings only. It is following Jesus when following becomes painful.

A disciple keeps following even when comfort disappears. A disciple keeps following even when obedience costs something.

And this is why many believers are saved but are not disciples.
