The Roman centurion understood something about authority that many people around Jesus had not understood.
He came to Jesus because his servant was sick. Jesus was willing to go to his house, but the centurion sent a message saying that Jesus did not need to come.
He understood that Jesus could simply speak from where He was, and the servant would be healed.
Why did he believe this?
He explained it through his own experience of authority. He said, “For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me.”
He understood that because he was under authority, he also had authority over others. He could tell one soldier to go, and the soldier went. He could tell another to do something, and the soldier did it.
His authority did not come merely from the volume of his voice. When he spoke, there was an entire authority behind him.
That is what he recognized in Jesus.
The centurion understood that Jesus was also under authority. There was something behind Jesus, because Jesus Himself was under someone.
1 Corinthians 11:3 says, “the head of Christ is God.”
This is a key principle: because you are under authority, you can have authority over what is under you.
The centurion understood this naturally because his daily life was built around authority. Jesus saw his understanding and marveled at his faith.
This is why authority is not merely about commanding things. You must first understand what it means to be under authority.
If you do not know your head, you cannot properly operate in what has been placed under you.
