Many people are asking God for answers, direction, breakthrough, clarity, and help. Yet God has already spoken about one of the biggest obstacles that stands in the way.
The Scripture says, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” Then immediately it adds, “Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” (James 4:8)
What is a double-minded heart?
A double-minded heart is a heart that wants two things at the same time. It wants God, but it also wants something else that competes with God. It wants God’s approval, but it also wants to hold on to pride. It wants the rewards of obedience, but it does not want to surrender completely.
Many believers think impurity always means something obviously sinful. Not necessarily. Pure simply means one thing. Pure water is only water. Once you add something else to it, it is no longer pure water. It may still look clear, but it is no longer pure.
In the same way, a heart can appear spiritual while carrying mixed motives. You may come to God saying you want Him, but what you really want is money. You may pray, fast, attend church, and appear devoted, but your true objective is something else entirely.
That is what Scripture calls double-mindedness.
God is looking for people whose hearts are single. One purpose. One allegiance. One desire above every other desire.
The problem with many believers is not that they have no interest in God. The problem is that God has become one interest among many.
God does not want a divided heart. He wants a whole heart.
