Many people have what I call Frankenstein theology.
Frankenstein was a fictional creature from Mary Shelley’s novel. The creature was not one body. Different parts from different bodies were stitched together to make one creature. That is what many people’s theology looks like.
You take one definition from a famous preacher. You take another definition from your tradition. You take another opinion from the denomination your parents belonged to. You take what one person says about faith, what another says about demons, what another calls love, and you join all of it together.
You end up with Frankenstein theology.
Theology means the study of God. Theos means God, and logia refers to study. So theology is the study of God. But what is your study of God made from? Is it pieces from everything you have heard?
You may believe in Jesus Christ, but perhaps you learned something about demons from one person, something about the afterlife from another source, something about family and life from Islamic law, something else from your tradition, and something else from a famous preacher. You have taken pieces from different places and stitched them together. That is a problem.
There is an orderly way to build your understanding of God. One reason some people’s entire mindset changes when they are properly taught is because, for the first time, they are building a body properly, piece by piece, from the same source. The source is the Bible.
You cannot simply take one piece from here and another piece from there and assume that they will all fit together because they sound good.
Your theology needs to be built properly.
