Many people want to fight like Jesus, but they do not want to follow Him like disciples.
A disciple is not merely someone who believes. A disciple is someone who learns the ways of his Master until he begins to live like Him. If you want to fight like Christ, you must submit to the same kind of obedience that He walked in.
That is why Jesus said, “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, even their own life, such a person cannot be My disciple.” (Luke 14:26)
Nothing—not your family, your comfort, your reputation, or even your own life—can be allowed to stand above obedience to Christ.
Many people lose spiritual battles because they cannot overcome simple discomfort.
Some cannot read their Bible because someone in the house mocks them. Some stop praying because they fear what people will say. Others know exactly what God requires, yet refuse because obedience may cost them relationships or acceptance.
A young medical student gave his life to Christ and refused to turn back. His father publicly disowned him, drove him out, and for six months he lived in the church building while the brethren cared for him. His father even threatened to divorce his mother if he refused to abandon Christ.
Yet he remained faithful.
Six months later, the same father called him home and declared that all his children were free to attend whichever church they desired.
That battle was not won by arguments. It was won by steadfast obedience. His victory brought freedom not only to himself but to his entire family.
Many people are asking God for authority while avoiding the very sacrifices that produce authority. Yet every true warrior pays a price before he carries influence. Every disciple must settle the question of allegiance before the day of battle arrives.
Do not pray for great victories while refusing small acts of obedience. The disciple who keeps choosing Christ when it is costly is the disciple who is learning how to fight.
