“For this very reason make every effort to add to your faith virtue; to virtue knowledge; to knowledge self-control; to self-control perseverance; to perseverance godliness; to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness love.” – 2 Peter 1:5-7.
You would think once you reach godliness, you’ve arrived. But after godliness there is still brotherly kindness. And after that, there is love. How much more can you love someone than a brother? Yet the list ends with love.
Selfishness is a major enemy. That is why its countermeasure is at the highest step: love. That is why very godly people can still be selfish. People can manifest godliness with selfishness. They can manifest brotherly kindness with selfishness. They can manifest self-control with selfishness. The person has perseverance and is still selfish, and you’re wondering, “How are you like this?” Now you understand why. It is a last-stage enemy.
Jesus said, “No greater love has a man than this, than that he lay down his life for his friend.” – John 15:13
Laying down your life is love. Refusing to lay it down is selfishness. The extent to which you are unwilling to die that another might live—whether physical or in decisions or comforts—that is the extent to which you still carry selfishness.
