Let me teach you how it works. It’s in the book of Psalms, chapter 23. You’ve read it, but you didn’t see it. It says, “He prepares a table before me in the presence of my enemies.” What you would have preferred is no enemies at all. But that’s not what the scripture says.
So first, let’s define who an enemy is. 1 Peter 2:11 says that the desires of the flesh war against your soul. If something is warring against you, it is your enemy. So your enemy is not first the person in your office or your village. Your enemy is the desires of your flesh.
There are levels to this: spirit, soul, and body. Someone can be an enemy to your body—sickness, disease, someone trying to harm you physically. That exists. But the greater enemy spoken about in scripture is the enemy of your soul.
And many people miss this. They focus on external enemies: who is blocking your promotion, who is sitting on your money, who is hindering your marriage. Meanwhile, the real war is inside your soul. Your desires, your thoughts, your inner condition—that is where the war is.
So when the Psalm says your table is set in the presence of your enemies, understand this: God is not removing all enemies. He is sustaining you while the real warfare is ongoing in your soul. If you don’t understand who your enemy is, you will fight the wrong battle your whole life.
