Some people who came to Christ later in life carry a regret about the years they spent without serving God. They think, “I wish I had come earlier. I wish I had given my life to Christ sooner. I wish I had not spent all those years as a sinner. How can I restore everything I lost?”
I advise you not to think that way.
Yes, there are advantages to the time you have already spent laboring for God. At the final day of rewards, God will reward people according to what they have done. You are not rewarded simply because you have a gift. You are rewarded for your deeds and your labor.
So if you have been born again longer, serving God longer, obeying Him longer, and laboring for Him longer, there are rewards connected to that obedience that someone who just came to Christ does not have.
Think about the older brother of the prodigal son. He became angry when his father received his younger brother and celebrated his return. But look at what the father told him: “My son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours” [Luke 15:31].
The prodigal had taken his share and gone away. He came back empty-handed. The older brother had remained in the house longer and was blessed for it.
So do not look at someone who came late and think that everything is now exactly the same because God is generous with His mercy and gifts. God is merciful to the person who returns, but that does not mean the years of obedience have no value.
And if you are the one who came late, this is not meant to discourage you. Start accumulating your reward now. Hurry.
Look at Paul. He said he labored more than the other apostles [1 Corinthians 15:10]. He did not spend his time regretting the years before Christ. He gave himself completely to the work in front of him.
So stop comparing yourself with people who started earlier. You cannot recover yesterday, but you can use today.
You are not working for God to purchase forgiveness. Christ has already dealt with that. But you are laboring for reward.
Start now. Work hard. Give yourself to God. What you do matters.
