When Jesus speaks about a talent in Scripture, you have to understand what the word means in its context. It is not talking about whether you can sing, preach, or do something naturally well. A talent was a weight.
The ancient world used different measurements of weight. You come across the shekel, the denarius, the mina, and the talent. These were connected to weight and value.
A shekel was a unit of weight. Genesis 23:15–16 tells us that Abraham weighed out 400 shekels of silver to pay for the burial site for Sarah. Exodus 30:13 speaks about the half-shekel temple tax. First Samuel 17:5 tells us that Goliath’s armor weighed 5,000 shekels of bronze.
Then you have the denarius. It was roughly the equivalent of a day’s wages for a worker. So when you read about someone being paid a denarius for a day’s work, you should understand what that means.
Jesus used this in His teaching about the workers in the vineyard. Some people worked all day, while others came later, but they received the same agreed payment. The people who had worked longer became angry because they thought the others did not deserve the same amount.
But the master answered, “Are you envious because I am generous?” [Matthew 20:15].
This is where you have to understand something about God. He is generous.
Sometimes He gives people things that, in your estimation, they are not worthy of. Sometimes you look at someone and wonder, “How did this person receive this gift? How did this person receive this calling?”
But God has the right to do what He wants with what belongs to Him.
The quicker you understand that, the quicker you will have peace. If you spend your time being jealous and envious because God gave someone else something, you are fighting God’s generosity.
