The Word of God does something very serious to us. It reveals what is inside us.
Hebrews 4:12–13 says, “For the word of God is alive and active, sharper than any double-edged sword. It penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.”
There are two things in that passage. There is a blessing there, and there is a threat.
The blessing is that God knows everything about you. Everything is uncovered before Him. He knows the secrets of your heart. He knows what you are thinking. He knows what you have gone through.
That is the caring part.
But then there is the other part: “to whom we must give account.”
That means that after God addresses the secrets of your heart, your response to what He has said matters. One day, you will give an account to God.
God will be able to say, “What did I say to you? What is in My word? What did I show you that day? What did you do with it?”
Among the things God gives us is His word. The word of God is living and active and sharp. When that word hits you where you live, God expects you to respond.
It is not enough that you heard it.
It is not enough that you understood what was being said.
The question is: what did you do with it?
Jesus gave a similar picture in Luke 19. A certain man went into a far country to receive a kingdom and return. Before he left, he called ten of his servants, gave them money, and told them, “Do business with this till I come.” When he returned, he called those servants back so that he might have an account of what business they had done [Luke 19:12–15].
God gives you things, and He expects something from you concerning what He has given.
When the word of God finds you, respond to it.
